The institute of national and international law

The needs of the modern period in the development of our society objectively predetermine the necessity to train specialists with higher education. The extension of the access to a quality legal education is the first and necessary step towards providing the country with qualified personnel in the field of law, and therefore the construction of a modern rule of law and democratic state.

It was on the initiative of the President of International Humanitarian University (IHU) Academician S.V. Kivalov by the 1 September 2005 Decision of the Academic Council of IHU that the Institute of National and International Law of IHU was established and it has been successfully functioning since then.
At present, all necessary conditions for training of highly qualified specialists in two educational programs, namely “Law” and “International Law” for educational levels of “BA”, “Specialist” and “MA” under contract (self funded) have been created at the Institute of National and International Law.
The training program for specialists in “International Law” goes alongside the profound study of foreign languages, which further gives the possibility of obtaining the additional qualification of “Interpreter”.
The studies are carried out both on full-time and part-time basis.
The languages of education are Ukrainian, Russian and English.
The academic process at the Institute of National and International Law is provided by 12 professors, Doctors of Law; over 50 associate professors, Candidates of Law; 60 lecturers and assistants.
The Institute includes six departments:
• Department of Theory and History of State and Law;
• Department of Criminal Law, Process and Criminalistics;
• Department of Civil and Commercial Law and Procedure;
• Department of International Law and Comparative Law;
• Department of Constitutional Law and Public Administration;
• Department of Humanities.
The fact that the Institute of National and International Law systematically initiates national and international scientific conferences and other events testifies to the high level of professional and scientific activity of the academic staff. Quarterly publication of scientific works collections by the professors and academic staff of the Institute of National and International Law is an important area of the research work, e.g.
- “The Scientific Bulletin of International Humanitarian University”. Series: Law "(included in the List of scientific and professional editions of Ukraine);
- “The Almanac of International Law”.
The Institute has a Specialized Academic Council for candidate of science and doctoral dissertations; postgraduate courses in four specialties are available:
(12.00.01) - Theory and History of State and Law; History of Political and Legal Doctrines;
(12.00.03) - Civil Law and Civil Procedure; Family Law; Private International Law;
(12.00.08) - Criminal Law and Criminology; Penal law;
(12.00.09) - Criminal Procedure and Criminalistics; Forensic Expertise; Operatively-search Activity. Doctoral program has been established in specialty
(12.00.09) - Criminal Procedure and Criminalistics; Forensic Expertise; Operatively-search Activity.
The persons studying at the Institute of National and International law have the possibility to master the reserve officers’ training program for the students of higher educational institutions at the military training department. The department’s graduates receive the rank of “reserve second lieutenant”.
The knowledge and skills acquired during the training enable the students and graduates of the Institute to work on probation and study under master's and doctoral programs in the schools of law in Europe and the USA.
Presently, over 1,000 students study at the Institute of National and International Law including not only citizens of Ukraine, but also students from the Russian Federation, Bulgaria, Moldova, Belarus, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Iraq, Congo and others. The fact that a considerable number of foreigners study at the Institute of National and International Law unequivocally characterizes it as a unit of higher education institution of international level. The number of students of the Institute of National and International Law increases year by year.
In the historical dimension, the period of the Institute’s existence is far from being long. However, by this time, we have managed to establish a structural department with the traditions that allow occupying a leading position in the sphere of higher legal education in this country. Excellent technical facilities and professionalism of the academic staff, which is based on a solid foundation of culture, humanitarian knowledge and invaluable years of experience, have been conducive to the achievement of this goal.
All the above said makes it possible to meet the needs of the society in the new type of specialist able to address the most topical legal problems of today.
